STEER TRIAL
The grass fed trial is run in
two turn-off sections. The first for the domestic market, with the second being
for the heavy domestic market.
The trial provides an ideal
opportunity for beef producers to compare their cattle under independently
controlled grazing conditions. It also provides the vehicle for producers to
develop a deeper understanding of the factors influencing liveweight gain and
carcase quality.
All steers will be slaughtered
and evaluated at Radford’s Abattoirs. Carcases are evaluated using the Meat
Standards Australia Measurement System (MSA). Castricum Fine Foods have agreed
to purchase the MSA graded beef from both sections of the trial.
The weight gain results
(accounting for 45% of the points) are added to the carcase evaluation results
(accounting for 55% of the points) to determine the overall winners in each
section.
